The Irish Refugee Council has condemned the Government for deporting a 20-year-old Nigerian woman despite an ongoing appeal before the European courts.

Suliat Ibrahim was sent back to Nigeria today following the rejection of her asylum application.

However, the IRC has lodged a challenge to the rejection in the European Court of Human Rights and called on the Government to reverse the deportation.

"We’re utterly shocked that the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform has shown utter contempt for our international obligations," spokesman James Stapleton said.

He added that the deportation was unsafe and unjust.
