Greens slam Government waste policy

The Green Party has slammed the Government’s waste management plans outlined by Environment Minister Martin Cullen earlier today.

In a report ahead of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa this September, Mr Cullen said Ireland’s waste management policy will involve a combination of recycling, incineration and landfills.

However, the Green Party’s Ciaran Cuffe said the Government’s plans are in disarray.

"Incineration is not sustainable," he said. "It produces toxins and it produces toxic ash and I need look no further than Ringsend in the south inner city to see a glass recycling plant closing down and no government intervention.

"That means that over 250 tonnes of glass that was being recycled is now going to landfill."
