McCreevy denied use of euro windfall

The European Commission has told Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy that he cannot use a €600m windfall from the euro changeover to offset a deficit in the Government’s books.

During the currency change, old Irish banknotes and coins were returned to the Central Bank.
