SF councillor slams judge’s decision on gun ban

A prominent Sinn Fein councillor has accused a High Court judge in the North of endangering his life and his family by refusing him permission to carry a gun for his own protection.

Mr Justice Kerr dismissed Martin Meehan’s application for a judicial review of a lifetime ban on him carrying a gun.

The ban was introduced because of Mr Meehan’s previous convictions for paramilitary activity. The Antrim councillor said:

"He [Justice Kerr] ruled today that I should not have the right to protect my family. This despite the fact that I have been under constant threat and the victim of numerous loyalist murder bids."
