SIMI: Irish stations not to blame for smuggling

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says the country’s filling stations are in no way to blame for the cross-border fuel smuggling racket.

A new report has revealed that more than half of all petrol stations in the North are selling illicit fuel smuggled in from the South.

SIMI Chief Executive, Cyril McHugh, says it is not so long ago that those in the Republic were travelling across the border for cheaper fuel.

“A lot of people are coming from the North to buy their fuel in the Republic where previously it was the other way around. It is not just the tax on the fuel that is the difference, it is all the difference in the sterling," he said.
