FG to look into EU car proposals

Fine Gael is calling for an investigation into the EU’s plans to liberalise the sale of cars and parts.

Fine Gael is calling for an investigation into the EU’s plans to liberalise the sale of cars and parts.

It follows an EU decision to approve sweeping new rules to increase competition in the sector.

There are fears that this may lead to a massive hike in prices.

Deputy Gay Mitchell, who chairs the European Affairs Committee, says he is not ruling out holding hearings on the new regulations.

“I am asking for the staff of the committee to get a report from the European Commission as to what these proposals are and how they will effect the price of car sales in Ireland," he said.

"I think it is something we should inquire into and something we should call witnesses to appear in front of the committee about."
