Government to protect terrestrial television

The government is planning a programme which will ensure that all Irish sporting events are covered by terrestrial television.

The move comes after the latest announcement by the FAI that Sky sports has been given the rights to Irish international games at home.

The Minister for Communications Dermot Ahern made the announcement last night in an effort to safeguard coverage of Irish sporting events in the future.

Nonetheless, it is thought that sporting bodies such as the GAA and the FAI will not be happy with Mr Ahern’s move.

Such action could take away from lucrative deals for the sporting groups. Sporting events could include rugby internationals, the All-Ireland final, and individual soccer matches.
