Ahern insists neutrality declaration is legally binding

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has rejected suggestions that the EU declaration he is seeking on Irish neutrality will have no legal impact.

Opponents of the Nice Treaty have said the declaration is not legally binding and therefore not worth the paper it is written on.
