Deadline for Fine Gael leadership approaches

The deadline for entering nominations in the Fine Gael leadership race is midday today.

The candidates so far include Enda Kenny, Gay Mitchell, Richard Bruton and Phil Hogan.

Fine Gael member, Richard Deasy, is protesting against the party’s decision not to consult with ordinary members to select a leader.

Deasy feels the decision is too important not to include the broad membership.

He said: "We are calling on all members of the party because this is a make our break situation for the future of Fine Gael and we are asking all members to come to a vigil that is taking place tomorrow night.

"Alternatively if you are in the Dublin earlier to attend the corresponding meeting that is taking place in the Gresham hotel."
