Independents' success at FG expense

The main story in Connacht-Ulster seems to be the success of Independent candidates at the expense of Fine Gael.

In Sligo-Leitrim, Independent Marian Harkin looks like taking a seat from Fine Gael's Gerry Reynolds.

In Galway East, Independent candidate Paddy McHugh, who has campaigned on local health issues, could also take a Fine Gael seat.

In Mayo, Dr Gerry Cowley is set to take a seat once again from Fine Gael.

Meanwhile, Eamon O'Cuiv looks set to top the poll for Fianna Fáil in Galway West, where the party hopes to take three seats.
