Turnout expected to exceed 1997 figures

Returning officers in many constituencies have predicted that the turnout in today’s general election will be higher than the 65.9% recorded in 1997.

The average turnout ahead of the evening rush today was 30%, but that figure is expected to rise sharply before polls close at 10.30pm.
