Taoiseach defends Morris Tribunal

Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is defending the setting up of the Morris Tribunal to inquire into allegations of Garda corruption in Co Donegal.

The McBrearty family of Raphoe recently rejected the tribunal, opting instead to bring their case to the European Court of Human Rights.

During campaigning in the Northwest, Ahern insisted the State and Minister for Justice is answerable to the inquiry.

Mr Ahern said McBrearty’s stance raises questions about their sincerity towards the investigation.

“This is a fully independent judicial inquiry of the most widest nature that you can possibly have. If you reject that then you have to ask the question do you want it? So if you can work out a terms of reference that is more accountable than the actual Minister pleading that he could have to go before it I would be glad to hear it."
