Report: Independent body should deal with immigration

A new report on racism in Ireland recommends that a separate body other than the Gardai be set up to control immigration at borders.

The study also suggests that Gardai establish a National database of racist crimes.

This is the second report on Ireland from the European Commission and Racism and tolerance and while it commends some of the steps taken to combat racism it also points out some of the weaknesses.

The report also suggests that complaints made against gardai on racist grounds should be investigated by a body independent of the Gardai.

And with the increased numbers of immigrants and Asylum seekers the ECRI also recommends a new body of officers be set up.

The report also highlights the plight of travellers, with many denied the right to hotels, restaurants and pubs, as well as being the victims of hate crimes.
