Use army camp to detain juveniles - FG
New initiatives are being demanded to combat the rising levels of youth crime in the wake of the deaths of two gardai in Dublin at the weekend.
Fine Gael says the youths involved in the incident are only on the streets because there was nowhere to detain them.
The party's Brian Hayes has suggested the use of the army prison in the Curragh camp, Co Kildare, as a short term detention centre for teenage thugs.
"Something has to be done to take kids who are out of control off the streets," he said. "In Dublin there's only fifty places where kids can be in a residential setting. What we're calling for is a totally new approach."
