Religion row continues as Gaelscoil principal is sacked

A bitter dispute is raging over a decision to sack the principal of a multi-denominational Gaelscoil in Co Meath.

The board of management at Gaelscoil Thulach na nOg in Dunboyne has dismissed Tomas O' Dulaing over his refusal to separate children during religion classes.

Yesterday, the board told Mr O'Dulaing that they wished to dismiss him because of his refusal to agree to segregation.

Mr O'Dulaing claims that religious education - particularly preparation for Holy Communion - should take place outside normal school hours.

He says it is wrong to ask Protestant children to leave class when Catholic children are being taught religion.

Most of the parents of children at the school have strenuously defended Mr O'Dulaing's stance, as have the INTO, who say they are outraged at the board's decision.
