Former Junior Minister Bobby Molloy has apologised for the affair which led to his resignation from the Government this morning.

The Galway west TD resigned after admitted to making an "improper" approach to a judge in relation to a rape case.

Mr Molloy admitted that his actions were wrong and said: "The enormity of it dawned on me afterwards: that this approach shouldn’t have been made and therefore you’ve crossed the line and there’s nothing to do other than to apologise for it and regret it."

The Progressive Democrats veteran also said he decided to withdraw from the upcoming general election race in the interests of his party.
