NUJ worried about threats to Northern journalists

The National Union of Journalists in the North is seeking a meeting with the police chief constable to discuss threats to reporters from loyalist paramilitaries.

The union has already met Jane Kennedy, the British government’s Stormont security minister, to discuss the threats.

The NUJ is seeking government aid to help secure the homes of journalists who have been threatened and has warned of the real danger of self-censorship if the authorities do not protect the media.

Five months ago, Sunday World reporter Martin O’Hagan was shot dead by loyalists in Lurgan, Co Armagh.
