The group campaigning for the release of the three Irishmen being held in Colombia has expressed fresh concerns for the men’s safety.

The Bring Them Home campaign said there has been unrest at La Picota jail in Bogota, where Niall Connolly, Martin McCauley and Jim Monaghan are being held.

A spokesperson for the campaign also said that traces of poison have been found in food prepared in the prison’s kitchen.

The three men, who all have republican connections, were arrested last August while leaving a safe haven controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a Marxist rebel army which has been fighting the government since the 1960s.

The men are due to be tried for allegedly training FARC guerrillas.
