Six new towns to get CCTV cameras

Justice Minister John O’Donoghue has announced plans to install closed-circuit television cameras in six town centres by the end of this year in an effort to reduce street crime and alcohol-related violence.

The minister also said another 11 towns will get CCTV next year as part of a multi-million euro investment. Mr O’Donoghue unveiled these plans at a conference of garda sergeants and inspectors last night.

He also gave details of planned new public order legislation giving the courts the power to close troublesome premises and to ban troublemakers from certain pubs, clubs and fast food outlets.
