UK unionist deputy leader resigns

The deputy leader of the UK Unionists in Northern Ireland has resigned on the eve of the party’s annual conference.

David Vance is standing down as Robert McCartney’s No. 2 after seven years with the party.

Attempts he said to make the party a more dynamic organisation had not met with any enthusiasm from his leader.

Mr Vance said today: ‘‘Whilst I still hold the highest regard for Mr McCartney’s political analysis, it is impossible to remain in an effective working relationship.’’

Mr McCartney, a leading QC, is the party’s only member at the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The annual conference is due to take place in Bangor, Co Down tomorrow.
