Counting of abortion votes gets underway

Election officers at 28 locations throughout Ireland have begun counting the votes cast in yesterday’s abortion referendum.

Politicians’ calls for a high turnout appear to have been ignored, with less than 40% of the electorate casting their votes, according to early indications.
