Justice Dept rejects penalty points delay claim

The Department of Justice has insisted arrangements are being made to ensure sufficient funds are available for the penalty points system for motorists to be put in place.

A spokesperson for the Minister said he is fully committed to the introduction of the computer facilities required to enable gardai to operate the system.

The statement follows revelations earlier that a shortage of funding could see the project further delayed.

It is understood the evaluation of tenders is close to completion and contract negotiations will be underway within weeks.
