A garda sergeant arrested yesterday on suspicion of sexual assault was released without charge last night after being quizzed for several hours.

The officer was taken to Dun Laoghaire garda station after a juror in a criminal trial accused him of sexually assaulting her when the jury was sent to a hotel for the night after failing to reach a verdict.

The sergeant in question has been suspended from duty pending a full investigation.

The alleged victim is believed to have made a statement after being questioned at length at the weekend.
