Patrick Sweeney, of Ballintugher in Co Sligo, died at half past one yesterday afternoon when the van he was driving struck a dumpster.

He was just one of four people who died in a series of road accidents yesterday, another man was killed on the Cork-Tipperary border when his car crashed into a pillar while yesterday morning a woman pedestrian died after being knocked down in Churchtown in south Dublin.

Another pedestrian was also killed in Co Louth when he was hit by a mini-bus just north of Drogheda.
