Suicide bid victim 'was ex-convict'

A man who walked into a Dublin police station and shot himself in the head has served time in prison for republican paramilitary offences, it emerged today.

Security sources said the Belfast man, who remains in a critical condition in hospital, was known to them on both sides of the Irish border.
