Psychiatrists support Government on abortion referendum

Two leading psychiatrists have come out in support of the Government in the abortion referendum.

In what is being described as a significant intervention into the abortion debate, they have said abortion is not a psychiatric issue and there are no psychiatric conditions for which abortion is the only answer.

Professor of Clinical psychiatry at Trinity College in Dublin, Anthony Clare, and Professor of Psychiatry at University College Dublin, Patricia Casey, have issued a joint statement.

They say the proposed amendment provides support and protection for women’s health and the health and protection of their unborn babies.
