Gardai in Waterford are welcoming the Inquiry into alleged falsification of crime records in the district.

It follows claims that crime figures in the Waterford division were falsified to make it look as though robberies were solved when no one was convicted for the crimes.

Chief Supt Michael McGarry has welcomed the investigation saying that he is confident it will be proved that "everything is above board".

He also said he believed the crime unit in Waterford is "one of the best in the country".

The Inquiry is believed to be concentrating on statistics for 2001.
