An Bórd Pleanála has rejected an appeal from environmentalists against the construction of a peat-fired ESB power station in Shannonbridge, Co Offaly.

Earlier this week, the planning authority also rejected an identical appeal against the construction of a similar station in Lanesboro, Co Longford.

Speaking after today’s decision, a spokesman for the ESB said several hundred people will be employed during the construction phase of the project, while 40 full-time workers will be hired when the plant is finished.
