Cardinal Desmond Connell has hit out at the rising tide of "almost casual violence" in Dublin, singling out the suspected racist killing of a Chinese student as one of the worst examples.

In a message to mark 80 years of the Garda Siochana, the Cardinal said there seems to be increasing levels of violence, "even to the excess of murder".
