An Bord Pleanala has rejected an appeal by Friends of the Irish Environment against the construction of a peat-fired ESB power station in Lanesboro, Co Longford.

The planning authority upheld Longford County Council’s original decision to grant planning permission for the station.

The environmental group which challenged the ruling described today’s decision as scandalous, but locals have welcomed it because of the 400 jobs which will be created.

An Bord Pleanala is expected to rule on a similar challenge to a planned ESB station in Shannonbridge, Co Offaly, later this week.
