No new virus outbreaks at Mayo Hospitals

Two hospitals in the Western Health Board area are confident they’re managing to contain an outbreak of "Winter Vomiting Disease".

Authorities have been appealing to people to avoid visiting Mayo General Hospital and the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar in an attempt to prevent its spread.

The regional manager for acute hospital services in the Western Health Board area, Dr Mary Hynes, is warning it’s still to early for complacency.

"We feel it has been very, very helpful because this is a highly contagious virus," she said, "what we were trying to do was reduce the amount of movement in the hospital.

"We haven’t had any new cases of this winter vomiting over the weekend so we’re hoping things are settling down.

"Fingers crossed, but it’s a little too early to get complacent yet."
