A European ruling could lead to the end of the Shannon stopover on transatlantic flights.

The advocate general of the European Court of Justice is recommending that ‘open skies’ agreements between the US and eight member states is contrary to community law.

Although Ireland is not involved in today’s court proceedings, Munster MEP John Cushnahan said: "If the European Court of Justice follows his opinion, which they normally do, then it has huge implications for Shannon’s transatlantic service."
