Missing fisherman found after boat capsizes

A fisherman missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Northern Ireland has been found alive.

Rescue teams had searched Carlingford Lough, Newry, after the fishing boat Charisma capsized 90 metres off shore.

He was brought ashore by lifeboat and taken to hospital, said a coastguard spokeswoman. Two crew members were rescued by another fishing boat.

His condition is not known, but one of the men rescued earlier is reported to be in a critical condition and the other stable in the Daisyhill Hospital in Newry. None of the men have yet been named.

Two of the three crew aboard the Charisma were rescued by the crew of the fishing boat the Cassie Anne.

A mayday sent from the other boat, the Cassie Anne, was picked up by Belfast Coastguard setting in motion a search for the missing third crewman.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Kilkeel and Newcastle along with local police are currently carrying out a shore based search. The rescue helicopter from RAF Aldergrove is also searching the area.

The two rescued crewmen were landed into the care of the local ambulance service and taken to Newry Hospital for checks.

Richard Newell, Duty District Officer at Belfast Coastguard, said: "The fact that the vessel was so close to shore has given us a relatively small search area, we are expecting to have a police dive team on scene shortly to search below water."
