Iarnrod Eireann announce record year

Figures from Iarnrod Eireann show that more people travelled by rail this year than ever before.

Passenger numbers also reached all time highs on Intercity, Dart and Suburban services during 2001.

By close of business tonight almost 37.2m people will have used the services this year.

Another 75 miles of track was renewed and upgraded during 2001 with further infrastructural development planned for next year.

This will include major resignalling and track layout work at the country’s busiest Intercity station, Heuston in Dublin.
