Fine Gael has disputed claims by the Department of Health that nurse shortages have not forced hospitals to leave beds lying idle.

Peter Kelly, the secretary general of the Department of Health, told a Dail committee today that no beds are left idle because of staff shortages, but admitted that there are sometimes seasonal closures when staff take summer and Christmas holidays.
