Adams defends visit to Cuba

Sinn Fein President, Gerry Adams, is defending plans to meet Cuban President Fidel Castro during his four-day visit to the country.

Speaking en route to the Cuban capital Havana today, Mr Adams said he was fulfilling a long-standing engagement to unveil a memorial to Republican hunger strikers who died in 1981.

He said he also wanted to acknowledge Castro’s support for the hunger strikers.
