Man arrested following Waterford robbery

A man in his thirties has been arrested by gardai in Kildare in connection with an armed robbery in Waterford yesterday.

A man in his thirties is due before a special court sitting in Co Kildare charged in connection with a bank robbery in Waterford yesterday.

The robbery took place at around 7.30pm when the man entered the TSB Bank

on Barronstrand St in the city centre and threatened staff with what is believed to be a gun.

The staff gave the thief £2,000 in cash and the man escaped on foot.

He was detained at 9.30pm by gardai in Naas and a gun and a quantity of cash were recovered.

The man is believed to be originally from Scotland and was living recently in a hospital in Waterford.

He can be held for up to 48 hours under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
