Police in the North have said a weapons seizure in Coleraine, Co Antrim, last night was linked to loyalist paramilitaries.

Four men were arrested after two guns, ammunition, gloves and balaclavas were found when police stopped a car in the Ballycastle Road area of the town.

All four are from the Coleraine area and are still in police custody.

In recent days, the police in the North have warned Catholic workmen on 40 construction sites in Derry that loyalists had placed them on a death list.

Last week, suspected loyalists attempted to murder a Catholic civilian in a drive-by shooting in the village of Clady in Co Antrim.

The Red Hand Defenders, a cover-name for the UDA and the LVF, has murdered two youths in sectarian drive-by shootings so far this year.

Several weeks ago, the British Government declared that it no longer recognises the UDA and LVF ceasefires, but so far, the authorities have done nothing to apprehend members of either group.
