The Government jet was grounded in Washington last night due to technical difficulties, forcing the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, to miss his scheduled meeting with UN secretary-general Kofi Annan.

The Government jet had only recently been given permission to fly after weeks of maintenance in Switzerland.
