17th century Rembrandt authenticated as genuine
A 17th century Rembrandt painting which has been in the possession of the National Gallery of Ireland since 1896 has today been authenticated as genuine.
Experts believe the painting, which depicts a "slap on the bottom" game, was bought for £20.
Until now the masterpiece has been categorised as a work of the school of Rembrandt, meaning it could be the work of a student or follower of the artist.
Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, Andrew O'Connor has refused to state how much the painting is worth but believes it is priceless.
