South Armagh residents slam 'miserly' demilitarisation plans

The South Armagh Farmers and Residents Group has described the British Government’s response to the decommissioning of IRA weapons as "miserly".

During the Weston Park negotiations earlier this year, the British Government apparently promised a significant move on demilitarisation if the IRA began the process of disarmament.

However, Declan Fearon, a spokesman for the south Armagh residents, said:

"What they’ve proposed for here in south Armagh is such a minimal response that it’s hardly worth the bother of doing it. There some 30 sangars here throughout south Armagh - they intend taking one of them away.

"There’s 12 hilltop posts - apparently they’re taking one, possibly two, away. It’s a miserly response from the British Government."
