Anti-globalisation protestors descend on Dublin District Court

A group of anti-globalisation demonstrators has gathered outside Dublin District Court in support of 14 of their colleagues who are facing public order charges following a protest last night.

The protestors were arrested after trying to storm the Burlington Hotel on Leeson Street, where a conference on privatisation was being held.

Gardai used batons to disperse the crowd last night and protestors have accused them of brutality.

Around 300 people gathered outside the Burlington Hotel last night for a peaceful protest against the Government’s privatisation policies.

However, around 40 people whom the gardai have described as ‘militant’ tried to storm the hotel and were beaten back with batons.

Globalise Resistance, one of the groups participating in the protest, insisted that it was peaceful and that the Gardai used heavy-handed tactics.

Green Party TD Trevor Sergeant and Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins have lent their support to the protestors’ cause.
