Quinn says abortion referendum is illegal

The Labour Party has told the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, that his plans for a referendum on abortion next year could be unconstitutional.

The bill would remove a ruling that allows abortion if the mother threatens suicide, while also introducing a 12-year prison sentence for anyone who carries out an illegal abortion.
