Ireland has set out a three-point plan to combat terrorism saying it is a battle we cannot afford to lose.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

Minister Cowen says that firstly, the nations of the UN must do all they can to bring the perpatrators of the September 11 attacks to justice.

Secondly, he said there must be a long term effort to destroy the funds and bases of terrorists.

Thirdly, he said the international community must redouble their efforts to end the many conflicts and injustices around the world which are exploited by terrorists.

The Minister said Ireland would play its part by co-operating in police investigations, and by opening our airports and allowing the use of our airspace.

Minister Cowen also pledged that during our presidency of the UN Security Council, Ireland stands ready to meet the challenges of combatting terrorism.
