Immunity calls for US survivors
The Irish Consulate in New York is continuing to deal confidentially with inquiries from families of illegal immigrants missing since the attacks on the World Trade Centre.
It follows the revelation that four Cavan men, who had been feared dead in the attack, have been located and are being treated for injuries in a New York hospital.
Their families had spent several days not knowing whether they had survived or not, but feared that inquiring through official channels could lead to the men’s deportation.
While immunity from deportation has not been guaranteed, reports from the US suggest that survivors of the attack may be granted special status.
Sinn Fein TD Caoimghin O’Caolain says the US authorities should grant immunity to those caught up in the tragedy.
