A Sinn Fein councillor in west Belfast expressed sympathy for relatives of the two missing boys, saying she hoped ‘‘some sort of closure’’ to the 27-year tragedy could be achieved.

‘‘We must also remember that these searches have had an enormous and traumatic effect on the residents of Rodney Drive - especially the two homes where the digs took place,’’ Lower Falls councillor Marie Cush added.

‘‘It is now essential that all resources are now directed towards helping the residents of Rodney Drive get their lives back to some sort of normality after what has been a particularly distressing period.’’
