The Chairman of the Dairy Committee of the Irish Farmer’s Association has called on the Government to liase with officials in the North to adopt an all-Ireland approach to animal health protection.

The Chairman of the Dairy Committee of the Irish Farmer’s Association has called on the Government to liase with officials in the North to adopt an all-Ireland approach to animal health protection.

2,013 cases of foot-and-mouth have now been reported in the UK, compared with just one outbreak in Ireland last March.

Padraig Walsh said that the restrictions put in place earlier this year to combat the disease should be stepped up.

He suggested that complacency in this country could see the return of

foot-and-mouth, to the detriment of Irish agriculture.
