Fine Gael has called for the sacking of the board of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service to restore public confidence in the institution.

The call comes after chairperson Patricia Barker resigned because she was reportedly unhappy with her board colleagues.

Fine Gael health spokesperson Gay Mitchell said Minister Micheal Martin should now accept a new board is needed.
