Security alert on Belfast motorway

The RUC has sealed off a section of the Belfast M1 motorway after a suspicious object was found close to a slipway leading from the road.

British Army bomb disposal experts are at the scene examining the device.

Meanwhile, the RUC has revealed that several hundred petrol bombs were discovered in the Glenbryn area of north Belfast earlier today.

They were found following another night of rioting in which RUC officers were pelted with petrol bombs, stones and bottles.

A loyalist gunman also fired a machine gun in the Glenbryn area last night in a dangerous escalation of the nightly violence.
