Death in RUC custody to be probed

An investigation was launched in Northern Ireland today after a man died in police custody in Co Fermanagh.

The 55-year-old, understood to be an Englishman, died while in a cell at Enniskillen RUC station during the night.

The RUC said the man was arrested at lunch time on Thursday on a Crown Court warrant and had been due to appear in court today.

The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman was notified and sent a team headed by its Director of Investigations, David Wood, to Enniskillen to mount a probe.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The name of the dead man, who had been living in Co Fermanagh, has not yet been released by police.
